The Feedback People Deserve

The most generous conversation a leader can have is often the one they've been avoiding.

Many leaders care deeply about the people they lead. Ironically, that can become one of the reasons difficult conversations get delayed.
Nobody enjoys delivering feedback that may disappoint someone. Most leaders would rather preserve a positive interaction than create tension. The challenge is that silence rarely solves the problem. It often allows confusion, frustration, and missed opportunities to grow over time.

🌀 Growth Requires Honest Feedback
People deserve to understand what is expected of them. They deserve the opportunity to adjust, improve, and succeed. They deserve honesty long before a concern becomes a larger issue.
Viewed through that lens, a difficult conversation becomes something much different. It becomes an investment in another person's growth.

🌀 Avoidance Often Creates Bigger Problems
One of the most common frustrations employees express is being surprised by feedback that has been sitting unspoken for weeks or months.
Small concerns become larger concerns. Frustration builds. Assumptions fill the gaps left by a lack of communication.
Most people would rather hear the truth early, have a chance to improve, and know their leader is willing to help them succeed.

🌀 Clarity and Care Can Coexist
Emotional intelligence helps leaders balance both.
People want to feel respected and understood, but they also need accurate information about what is working and what needs attention. Growth becomes much more likely when empathy and accountability are present together.

The most effective leaders remain engaged after the conversation as well. They answer questions, provide support, and continue investing in the person's development rather than treating feedback as a one-time event.
Trust grows when people know where they stand.
Sometimes the most generous conversation a leader can have is the one they have been putting off.

Prepare for a Difficult Conversation in 60 Seconds
Before the conversation, write down three things:
1️⃣ The Issue
What specific behavior, action, or concern needs to be discussed?
2️⃣ The Impact
How is it affecting the individual, team, customers, or organization?
3️⃣ The Outcome
What would success look like moving forward?
Spending one minute answering these questions can help you stay focused on growth rather than frustration and make the conversation more productive for everyone involved.
